Box Garden
This聽section聽of the Eucalypt Walk聽was designed to display a wide range of tenacious and ornamental, low growing wildflowers and rockery plants.聽This approach has been refined and the Box聽Garden now supports two concepts; the top layer聽of dominant聽box eucalypts, the signature trees for this garden, and聽an聽understory聽dedicated to聽the highly significant聽flora of the Grampians region,聽an extensive plant聽display collected聽by the horticulture聽team聽over several field trips.聽
- Many of these聽wild collected聽species are listed as threatened, enhancing the conservation value of this collection.聽
- One of the most bio-diverse regions of Victoria, the Grampians National Park (Gariwerd) is home to one third of the state鈥檚 flora and is often called the 鈥楪arden of Victoria鈥.聽
- Box eucalypts all share the typical hard bark composed of short, tightly-held fibres.
Notes from the Curator
Mathieu Lascostes
Home to over 1000聽different聽species, the Grampians National Park provides sanctuary to 98 threatened plants, many of which聽are聽found聽nowhere else in聽Victoria.聽聽This聽Grampians collection is developed in聽close聽partnership聽with聽the WAMA project (Wildlife Art Museum of Australia) in Halls Gap, a great opportunity for both institutions to develop a coordinated multi-site conservation聽collection of聽the聽species聽at risk of聽extinction.聽Field trips are regularly聽organised聽by the聽Cranbourne聽horticulture team to collect plant material which is then propagated in our nursery. The聽field collection data and聽a sample specimen are then sent聽to the National Herbarium in Melbourne to be appropriately聽examined and catalogued.聽
